Funding Your Adoption When considering how to fund your adoption, remember that the expenses are not all due in one lump sum at the beginning of the process. Costs are paid throughout the adoption as services are rendered.

Employer Adoption Benefits - Many employers have adoption benefits. Check with your benefits manager or your health insurance. Some plans reimburse as expenses are incurred, and others reimburse after the adoption is final. Adoptive Families Magazine has a good article on how to lobby your employer for adoption benefits. The Dave Thomas Foundation provides information on adoption-friendly workplaces.
State Adoption Subsidy Programs - The North American Council on Adoptable Children provides information on adoption subsidies in all 50 states.

The current tax credit is fully refundable. (You don't need to owe taxes to be refunded for qualified adoption expenses.) It is $13,360 for those whose income is less than $185,210. There is partial credit for people those with income from $185,210 to $225,210.
Adoption Benefits guide for Federal Employees
LOANS AND GRANTS Banks - Most banks offer home equity loans for adoption expenses or an equity line of credit with the interest qualifying for a tax deduction. Check with your bank and accountant to see if you qualify. Borrow from your 401K or your life insurance policy and pay yourself back, with interest!
Ask a family member if they would be able to lend you some money at little or no interest, to be paid back at tax return time, when you recover some money spent by taking advantage of the federal adoption tax credit.
Gift of Adoption awards grants based on financial need. They have helped hundreds of families. They are not affiliated with any religion or adoption agency, and any US citizen adopting from anywhere may apply and be considered for a grant.
